Position Description:

A Research Technician I position is available at the University of Louisville starting immediately in the Department of Bioengineering.

The candidate will be focused on, but not limited to:

  • Managing projects from conception to completion.
  • Mentoring and leading teams of students.
  • Writing and revising scientific manuscripts reporting experimental results.
  • Managing laboratory supplies and ordering.
  • Compiling data into a usable format and conducting preliminary analysis.
  • Providing faculty supervisor and associated project members with weekly progress reports and written summaries/presentations detailing research efforts.

In addition, the candidate will be responsible for preparing drafts of manuscripts that detail their experimental findings. An ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, experience with prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell culture, small animal studies, microbiology, biochemical assays, confocal microscopy, and/or

fabrication/characterization

of materials. In addition, we seek someone with leadership skills, someone who is able to work independently and as a part of a team.

The Technician will be responsible for performing experiments under the direction of the faculty associated with the Department of Bioengineering.  The Technician will participate in the design, execution, and analysis/interpretation of laboratory research studies and summarizing/preparing these findings in oral/written communication and technical reports. Responsibilities may include: oral/written communication and technical reports; preparation of materials for research; leading small teams to conduct studies; and conducting experiments within the interest areas of drug delivery and biomaterials. 

Available projects involve developing therapeutic agent delivery vehicles for the mitigation of genitourinary infections, cancer applications, mucosal delivery applications, and investigation of bacterial progression. Broadly, the work is focused on integrating drug and probiotic delivery with chemistry, molecular biology, virology, quantitative transport modeling, cell culture, and animal models to formulate and translate potential therapeutic candidates from the laboratory to in vivo applications. A diverse and multidisciplinary approach is applied in collaborations with the UofL Center for Predictive Medicine, Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology, the Dept. of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and collaborators at other institutions.

We are specifically seeking candidates with a passion for research and bench top work. Enthusiasm to work at an interdisciplinary level with bioengineering, molecular biology, microbiology, and pharmaceutics is highly desirable. Candidates with experience in two or more of the following areas are preferred: 1) Drug delivery; 2) chemistry; 3) biomedical or chemical engineering; 4) molecular biology; 5) mathematical modeling; 6) bacterial research; 7) cell culture; 8) experience with biopolymers including: double/single emulsion, nanoparticles, nanofibers, 3D printed materials, and chemical synthesis of biomaterials.

Continuation of the position is contingent upon available funding.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Design, plan, and lead experiments.
  • Lead sample collection and processing.
  • Lead teams of students to perform experiments and write manuscripts.
  • Manage research and development activities and experiments.
  • Prepare materials and equipment necessary for laboratory experiments.
  • Preparation of materials for research reports (research summaries, data compilation/analysis, presentations, and scientific papers).
  • Analyze data and write research reports and scientific manuscripts.
  • Interface and coordinate research/development activities with third parties; including specification and purchase of materials and equipment from suppliers and manufacturers, coordination and directions of installation of instrumentation.
  • May instruct lab personnel in microbiology, drug delivery, or biomaterials.
  • Support sample collection and processing.
  • May oversee lab equipment.
  • Position may require phone and email communications with suppliers, and in-person meetings with contractors and research partners to obtain data and coordinate activities.
Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with experience in two or more of the following areas are preferred: Drug delivery; chemistry; biomedical or chemical engineering; molecular biology; mathematical modeling; bacterial research; cell culture; and/or experience with biopolymers including: double/single emulsion, nanoparticles, nanofibers, 3D printed materials, and chemical synthesis of biomaterials.

  • B.S. in Bioengineering, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Virology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science, and minimum of 1 year experience
  • Experience with experimental protocols, including biomedical, molecular biology, chemistry, assay experience, cell culture, and materials characterization techniques.
  • Research data analysis and manuscript writing experience; preparation of materials for research and published reports, as evidenced by prior work.
  • Experience in handling bacterial and viral agents.
  • Experience with BSL- and ABSL-2 research.
  • Polymer delivery vehicle (nanoparticle, fiber, film) experience.
  • Mentoring and overseeing of student or other personnel laboratory work.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, Powerpoint; Data Analysis: GraphPad, Excel
  • Research data analysis and manuscript writing experience; preparation of materials for research and published reports, as evidenced by prior work.
Target Compensation Maximum:

$31.38

Target Compensation Minimum:

$20.92

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
