The Letra Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms associated with dental, oral, and craniofacial conditions in humans. We use sophisticated genetic and molecular biology methods to identify causal genes and investigate the biological consequences of genetic variation on gene and protein function.



Job Summary

Manages day-to-day laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and best practices. Works with, adapts, and installs scientific equipment in research laboratories. Collaborates on routine projects and procedures. Manages inventory and equipment and performs budget functions.


Essential Functions 

The Letra Lab, part of the University of Pittsburgh Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics (CCDG), seeks an enthusiastic and skilled laboratory technician to support molecular and genetics studies of complex human dental, oral, and craniofacial conditions, including cleft lip/palate, dental anomalies, and dental infectious conditions and cancer. Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will perform laboratory experiments of a highly specialized nature involving sample quality control; DNA/RNA extraction, DNA sequencing and cloning, PCR, western blot, immunohistochemistry, other miscellaneous molecular biology techniques, cell culture and transfection, electrophoresis, histology, and imaging/microscopy. The incumbent will be responsible for accurate tracking and record-keeping of study samples. Mouse breeding and colony maintenance may be required depending on project. The incumbent may also support laboratory training of students. Technician will keep a detailed and accurate lab notebook and collect data to report to PI. Experience in a wet lab using molecular biology techniques is preferred.


Physical Effort 

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
