Job Description

Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor in Rangeland Ecology. The focus of this position will include rangeland stewardship, grazing management, and wildlife habitat management particularly in energy-dominated landscapes and associated emerging issues related to  renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and grazing interactions.  The position is a 12-month appointment, non-tenure track, with a 75% appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Research and a 25% appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.  The position will be located at the San Angelo Research and Extension Center and has an departmental appointment with the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX.  This position primarily serves Texas landowners and partners with scientists in other universities, agencies, and neighboring states as appropriate.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for research and educational efforts to assess and enhance rangeland/soil health, private land stewardship, rangeland, and wildlife habitat management in energy-dominated landscapes to include emerging challenges and opportunities such as solar grazing, carbon sequestration and other relevant range management research.

  • Develop an applied and recognized management-oriented Extension program that supports county agents and delivers best practices to land managers and energy companies regarding rangeland health at renewable energy sites and other appropriate locations. 

  • Supervises research and Extension personnel, including graduate students, and undergraduate students associated with the faculty members program. 

  • Works as a member of a multi-agency/multi-disciplinary team to conduct field research on enhancing or restoring healthy rangeland systems within renewable energy production areas in relation to industry needs and state and federal policy.

  • Conducts independent research responsive to land stewardship and agricultural production within energy production and rangeland systems.

  • Seeks extramural funding from federal, state, commodity groups, and other sources to fund research and outreach efforts.

  • Participates as a team member in rangeland research and technology transfer/outreach with other faculty affiliated cooperating agencies and institutions in the Texas, including Texas A&M University Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and Texas A&M University Department of Animal Science. 

  • Contributes to statewide programs in development of integrated rangeland management practices best suited to energy dominated working lands.  

  • Serves a critical need for the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management in its effort to achieve the mission of preparing the next generation of natural resource stewards through teaching, research, engagement, and policy.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Administrative Relationships:

  • Reports directly to the Center Director, Texas A&M AgriLife Research-San Angelo, with guidance from Associate Department Head for Extension, within the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management at Texas A&M University, College Station. 

  • Directs the work of support staff, and other technical personnel and graduate students assigned to the project.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Range Science, Rangeland Management, Natural Resources, or related field.

  • Experience in area of specialization, including rangeland ecology.

  • Ability to write grant proposals to secure external funding.

  • Evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Participation in professional societies.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience managing a research program.

  • Experience sourcing external funding.

  • Experience in leading research in rangeland management.

  • Demonstrated capability to perform independent research, supervise scientific support staff and graduate students, and publish results in refereed journals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language.

  • Ability to write grant proposals to secure external funding.

  • Competence in the use of personal computers and appropriate statistical-analysis software.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to cooperate as an interdisciplinary team member are required.

  • Ability to acquire a Texas driver’s license.

Location:

Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center is located on HWY 87 in San Angelo, Texas.

Facilities:

The center manages more than 15,000 acres of rangeland and several thousand head of livestock.  This includes property near San Angelo, Menard, Sonora, and Ozona.
