Postdoctoral Associate Position in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

We are currently seeking full-time Postdoctoral Associates to be part of our NIH-funded research team at Yale. Our research primarily investigates the outcomes following extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in pediatric critical care.

Research Focus:

The successful candidate will support two primary studies:

  1. A qualitative study assessing the impact on parents of children undergoing ECMO, with a focus on post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety, and depression.
  2. An international point-prevalence study to examine the epidemiology and risk factors associated with mental health conditions in these parents.

In supporting these studies, the successful candidate is expected to engage in a variety of research activities including drafting the research protocol in collaboration with the primary investigator, submitting the protocol to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), conducting interviews with parents, collaborating on data analysis, coordinating the international study, developing the case report form, analyzing the research data, and drafting manuscripts for publication.

Training, Mentorship, and Career Development:

The role provides significant opportunities for hands-on experience in pragmatic clinical studies, mixed methods research, and collaborative work across multidisciplinary, multi-site teams.

You will work directly under the guidance of Dr. Oliver Karam, MD, PhD, and collaborate with experts in implementation science, health services research, biostatistics, trauma-related psychopathologies, and critical care research.

The position also includes professional development opportunities such as mentorship, participation in national conferences, grant writing support, and engagement with the broader Yale academic community through seminars and events.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • MD degree required (completed before the start of the postdoctoral term).
  • Experience in pediatrics.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong project coordination skills, with experience managing studies across multiple regions. Fluency in at least two European languages is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective team collaboration capabilities.

Application Process:

Candidates interested in applying should send the following materials to Dr. Oliver Karam, MD, PhD, via email at [email protected]:

  • A brief letter of interest highlighting your qualifications for the role.
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume.
  • A first-authored writing sample.
  • Contact information for three references.
