About the Fellowship

The Office of Career Strategy seeks a 12-month full-time STEM Strategic Initiatives Fellow to conduct a landscape analysis of the local biotech industry; assess the potential for a robust talent pipeline between this industry and Yale STEM graduate students and postdocs; and build relationships with industry partners that expand this pipeline.  The position requires a highly motivated individual with a strong sense of initiative and excellent analytical, research and communication skills.

This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in strategic analysis, market and competitive research, industry engagement, and project management. You will work collaboratively with OCS staff, faculty, and other stakeholders within Yale and in industry.  It is an ideal opportunity for individuals passionate about bridging the gap between academia and industry and contributing to developing a thriving biotech ecosystem in Connecticut. It is also well suited for those interested in higher education administration, industry, and management careers.

Goals of the Fellowship

Under the guidance of the Director of Graduate and Postdoctoral Career Services, the Fellow will produce the following:

Market and Needs Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive analysis of the local biotech ecosystem that includes an assessment of key players and their specialization areas, market growth trends, talent needs, and the current talent acquisition challenges faced by local biotech firms.

Stakeholder Engagement: Establish relationships and initiate dialogues with human resource personnel, hiring managers, and other key stakeholders in the local biotech industry. Work with the Yale OCS team to connect students and postdocs with interested employers and promote job and internship opportunities.

Yale Talent Assessment: Develop an assessment of Yale’s postdocs and Ph.D. graduate students that evaluates their readiness, suitability, and preferences for opportunities in the local biotech industry. Gather data on the career outcomes of Yale postdocs following their Yale appointments via a survey or other method.

Strategic Planning and Program Design: Work with OCS leadership to develop a preliminary strategic plan for a talent pipeline program, including partnership structures and integration with existing educational or professional development programs.

Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s degree (Ph.D. strongly preferred) in the sciences with a strong interest in the biotech industry, and in applying an analytical mindset to real-world, strategic challenges. Research, consulting or industry experience in related disciplines, such as biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, biology or physics, is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including proficiency in gathering, managing, and applying quantitative and qualitative data to inform decision-making. Experience in survey design is helpful but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Experience performing outreach to engage diverse stakeholders and build productive collaborations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently while collaborating effectively within a team.

The salary range for this fellowship position is $65,000 - $85,000.  Information on benefits may be found on this webpage: https://your.yale.edu/work-yale/benefits/benefits-enrollment-2024/postdoctoral-associates-benefits-2024.
