Information & Responsibilities

CalArts Extended Studies is a self-supporting unit within California Institute of the Arts, providing  educational opportunities for creative professionals and life-long learners. CalArts Extended Studies non-degree credit courses reflect the artistic and academic integrity of the degree curriculum at CalArts. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse and changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course by course contracted basis. The contract is for the duration of the set development and delivery periods only and is subject to sufficient enrollment.

Any candidate that is offered employment with CalArts must complete the Form I-9 in accordance with the law. On the form, an employee must attest to their employment authorization. The employee must also present their employer with acceptable documents as evidence of identity and employment authorization. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Course Title:Performing Arts Summer Studio Intensive
Course Dates:   Session 1: June 17- June 28 and Session 2: July 8-July 19

Course Description: 

The Performing Arts Summer Studio Intensive is a 2-week course for young artists grades 9 to 12, offered at Harvard-Westlake School in partnership with the CalArts. Explore the intersections of dance, theater, music, performance art, and media as you work collaboratively while developing your own individual artistic voice and portfolio project. Learn from CalArts and Harvard-Westlake instructors as you take your ideas from page to stage. Studio work is supported by presentations, discussion, and critique. The course culminates in a group performance showcase.


Requirements

Instructor Duties:

  • Collaborate with the Harvard-Westlake instructor to develop the course outline in consultation with Extended Studies

  • Prepare and deliver course material in the assigned format

  • Collaborate with Harvard-Westlake staff to prepare classroom and facilities 

  • Respond to student questions and learning needs 

  • Participate in required orientations and complete mandatory training programs 

  • Complete required administrative tasks with Harvard Westlake and Extended Studies in a timely manner 

  • Employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies in the classroom


Qualifications
  • an advanced degree or comparable professional training in one or more areas of the performing arts, such as theater, dance, and performance art

  • an active, interdisciplinary, professional practice in the performing arts

  • experience with curriculum development and delivery for youth in the arts

  • excellent communication skills and experience collaborating in a team environment

  • a pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted

  • all qualified persons are encouraged to apply; however, only applicants with legal authorization to work in the United States will be considered for this part-time position

Salary

Total compensation  is  $9,000
