Summary

The School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Michigan has long been at the forefront of thoughtful teaching and online education. We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and learner-centered Health Behavior and Health Education Lecturer III (100% appointment) to join our team and contribute to our teaching mission. You will use your expertise in teaching and learning to provide an interactive and engaging experience for graduate students enrolled in the onlinePopulation and Health Sciences MPH program , theHealth Behavior and Health Education Master's program , and the School of Public Health Undergraduate program . This is a non-tenure track position, with a University Year appointment period (i.e., runs September 1 through May 31 each year).  This position will be full-time and we anticipate the candidate will begin August 26, 2024. We anticipate an offer will be made in May 2024 and is subject to the approval of the School of Public Health Executive Committee.

A Lecturer III role in the School of Public Health is a combination of teaching and administrative duties over the 9-month academic year with the possibility of an additional spring/summer appointment. The initial appointment period will be one (1) to four (4) years, and the appointment is renewable (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance).
You will report to the Health Behavior and Health Education Department Chair.

About the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education (HBHE):

Responsibilities*
  • Teach graduate courses in the Population and Health Sciences online MPH program, School of Public Health undergraduate program, and the Health Behavior & Health Education Master's program which includes prepping course materials, facilitating course sessions, holding office hours, and grading assignments.
    • Courses to be taught can include the following:
      • HBHE 590 - Principles of Community Engagement for Health Promotion  3 credits (Online Program spring/summer)
      • PUBHLTH 680 Applied Practice and Integrated Experience I 2 credits (Online Program)
      • PUBHLTH 681 Applied Practice and Integrated Experience II 2 credits (Online Program)
      • HBHE Professional Development- First year students 1 Credit (Master's Residential Program)
      • HBHE Professional Development- Second year students 2 Credits (Master's Residential Program)
      • Community-focused elective courses 3 Credits (Master's Residential Program)
      • Social determinants of health/health equity courses 3 Credits (Undergraduate Program)
      • Other applicable courses as necessary
  • Participate on the Population and Health Sciences curriculum committee and admissions committee
  • Serve as an academic advisor to an assigned group of graduate students 
  • Serve as an Applied Practice Experience and Integrated Learning Experience mentor to an assigned group of graduate students
  • Participate in online teaching and learning professional development activities 
  • Participate in HBHE faculty governance

Required Qualifications*
  • MPH, MS, or PhD in Health Behavior and Health Education, Community Health, Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, or a related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in the  content of courses we are looking to fill, including professional development, social determinants of health, and principles of community engagement in public health
  • 1 year of experience teaching at the college level
  • Enthusiasm for technology-enhanced learning in the context of a public research university

Desired Qualifications*
  • 3+ years of college-level teaching experience with at least 1 year of experience teaching online
  • Interest in developing and implementing anti-racist pedagogy
  • Experience with curriculum development

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
