The Global Village Learning Communities offer a year-long experience in a themed house. Students take two credit-bearing courses in the Fall and Spring, conduct research on a topic related to the theme, and engage with the larger New Brunswick community through service learning. There are five themes and courses offered for the 2024/2025 academic year: 1. Race, Gender, and Identity; 2. Sustainability and the Environment; 3. Global Health and medicine; 4. Africana- Gender & the Black Diaspora; and 5. La Casa – Latino/a/x & Caribbean Diasporas. Class is held on Mondays 5:40 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
This course explores how gender (e.g. female, male, trans*, non-binary, etc.) identity and relationships intersect with other social categorizations, including age and reproductive status (particularly for women), race/ethnicity, socioeconomic class, immigration status, educational attainment, to create systemic advantages or disadvantages that may explain and/or could address poor health outcomes within and across global communities. Understanding the relationships between these categories and how they play out in the body as it exists in sickness and also health, as at once a social, symbolic and political entity has profound implications for how we approach systems, processes and outcomes in global health. The course takes the materiality of the body as an entry point to thinking through spectrums of sex and gender in understanding health, health systems and evidence in health sciences.
