**This is a FULL-TIME, CONTRACTUAL position**

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine is currently seeking an experienced, full-time technician in the Department of Physiology. The selected candidate will perform general laboratory technician duties supporting the research for the ion channel nucleus of Drs. Andrea Meredith (https://meredithlab.org/) and Vivek Garg (https://www.vgarglab.com/).  The technician will be responsible for maintaining cell lines and the transgenic animal colony, conducting basic molecular biological techniques, and institutional compliance procedures and protocols.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Sterile cell culture from immortalized or stem cell lines and plasmid or virus-based transfections.
  • Execute biochemical procedures such as protein isolation and quantification, electrophoresis and Western blotting, and image-based quantification.
  • Lentivirus or AAV production and stable cell line generation
  • Molecular biology techniques, such as gene editing utilizing the CRISPR/Cas9 system and creating recombinant DNA by subcloning and PCR-based mutagenesis.
  • Performs mouse colony maintenance that includes tissue collection, genotyping, husbandry, and appropriate record keeping.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and fellows, assisting in developing lab procedures/policies for institutional compliance, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation, ordering supplies, and centralized laboratory record-keeping.
  • Accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of the PIs by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking. Contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. May supervise, mentor, or coordinate work of other lab members. May independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources.
  • Applies entry level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Decision making occurs within defined parameters. Supervisor defines assignments, expectations, and deadlines. Supervisor may review work for quality. Demonstrates initiative and discretion to resolve routine and non-routine matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.    
 

Qualifications

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.*
Preferred Experience: Sterile cell culture techniques, molecular biology (subcloning, plasmid preparation and transfection, western blotting), and mouse handling/husbandry.
Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Salary Range: $43,404 - $47,500 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
