Job Summary
The Hemodialysis Technician performs specialized patient care functions for the patient undergoing dialysis under the supervision of a qualified dialysis nurse.
Provides adequate supplies for the unit, including restocking as necessary and routine maintenance and disinfection of the machines and equipment. Responsible for water testing and general operation of RO system.
Required Qualifications
- One year experience in a chronic hemodialysis unit
- Active CA certification as Clinical Hemodialysis Technician - CCHT- (BONET or NANT)
- Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
- Aptitude for care of the patient with renal failure
- Selected basic patient care skills including aseptic technique
- Motivation to become a participant on a team dedicated to effective, safe patient care
- General understanding of transplantation as an alternative therapy
- General understanding of types, care, and use of various access devices
- Understanding of the importance of standardized technique and health hazards associated with poor performance
- Knowledge of design characteristics and principles of operation of the dialysis system as they contribute or inhibit the prescribed treatment results
- Basic knowledge of dialysis procedures
- Basic knowledge of the medical treatment of the patient with renal failure
- Basic knowledge of the objectives of dialysis therapy and the means by which those objectives are obtained
- Basic knowledge of emergency medical procedures
- Basic knowledge and understanding of elementary principles of dietary management in renal failure
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families
- Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to signs and symptoms of the onset of complications of dialysis; e.g. hypotension, seizures
- The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
License/Certification
- Active CA Certification as Clinical Hemodialysis Technician - CCHT- (BONET or NANT)
- Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
