Position Summary:
The Democratic Civic Engagement Coordinator will serve as the point person for non-partisan democratic civic engagement efforts at Michigan State University, under the auspices of the Center for Community Engaged Learning and the Office of Community and Student Relations. The coordinator will work to increase and sustain student participation in the democratic process and to support the institution in closing gaps in voting rates, through voter mobilization and civic education. A primary focus of this role is to support the MSUvote Campus and Community Initiative, comprised of faculty, staff, students, and community organizations involved in promoting voter engagement efforts at MSU.
Characteristic Duties:
- Manages and facilitates events, meetings, conferences, voting registration drives, and voting programs and projects.
- Supervises interns, fellows, and scholars working on democratic engagement efforts.
- Provides administrative support for the MSUvote initiative.
- Develops and coordinates educational materials for use in classrooms and in the co-curriculum.
- Coordinates resources and opportunities with multiple national organizations and networks of engaged colleagues.
- Facilitates training sessions on democratic engagement and voting.
- Manages updates to the MSUvote website.
- Maintains MSUvote Social Media Accounts.
- Designs promotional materials.
Responsibilities:
- Supports Democratic Engagement work with the strategic goal of increasing student participation in the democratic process through voter and civic engagement efforts.
- Provides support for campus-wide voter registration, elections, and engagement efforts.
- Develops and supports on-campus processes to increase student voter registration and participation.
- Actively builds partnerships with campus and community partners to grow the coalition to support goals.
- Drafts campus communications, oversees social media, and works in tandem with the SLE, UOE, and University Communications teams.
- Creates reports that summarize voter engagement activities, successes, and future planning to be shared with many national, local, and campus partners including the All In Action Plan and Voter Friendly Campus.
- Coordinates in-person and online voter registration efforts, collaborates with student groups to train and staff tabling events, and partners with SLE, University Communications and other campus units to create and deliver social media content, event promotions/plans.
- Partners with campus units to establish student voter registration as a key element of the campus culture, via new and transfer student orientation and at major fall/spring events.
- Represents MSUvote in network calls with the following national groups including the Big Ten Voting Challenge, All in Democracy Challenge, Voter Friendly Campus, and Campus Vote Project.
- Supports the Big Ten Voting Challenge and utilizes NSLVE (National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement) and other data and reports to tell the story of MSUvote, as well as to illustrate challenges and opportunities in democratic civic engagement.
- Collaborates and supports CCEL to foster civic and democratic engagement and develop and implement new training/workshops to educate and prepare students to participate in the democratic process more fully.
- Engages via Community & Student Relations to collaborate with municipal and public-service leaders.
- Facilitates relationships with community partners for the development and educational programs and presentations.
- Develops learning outcomes for workshops, training sessions and program specific goals and measurements for success; administers assessments and makes program changes as needed.
- Identifies and communicates with student organizations and campus units to co-sponsor/host/encourage participation in democratic civic engagement sessions.
- Secures grants and manages connected budgets and reporting that support democratic civic engagement.
- Delivers and assists with planning outreach program activities, strengthens partnerships, ensures adherence to policy, and assists with program administration to promote stable and productive relationships between the university and local community.
- Works effectively to ensure and expand access to programs, facilities, and educational services for diverse audiences, while being attentive to the priorities of equity and inclusion.
Responsibility for the Work of Others
May provide first-level supervision over regular and student employees.
Work Environment
Standard office environment. The job requires very little physical effort.
This position is currently funded through January 31, 2025 with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor's degree work, such as a Master's degree in Administration or a Behavioral Science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in administration, program development and personnel development and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to create content and manage social media platforms.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stakes and deadline driven environment when necessary.
- Able to work effectively with traditional undergraduate-aged and graduate and professional student populations.
- 2-3 years of experience working at a large public institution of higher education.
- 1-2 years of experience working on democratic engagement initiatives
