Department Purpose The Academic Retention Initiatives (ARI’s) at UC Davis aim to improve academic outcomes by amplifying and encouraging historically marginalized student populations through culturally relevant academic programs and resources. SAARI is part of the Student Affairs Academic Retention Initiatives which supports historically underrepresented and underserved scholar communities on campus. The Strategic African American Retention Initiative seeks to provide opportunities for a transformative educational experience at UC Davis for students of the African Diaspora. By engaging students in learning academic self-efficacy, Black Identity exploration and development and community building and engagement, the initiative addresses known societal, cultural and institutional barriers to retention, persistence and graduation. Through data-driven, research-based, decision-making, and collective and individual student experiences, the initiative provides support for academic achievement for all students of the African Diaspora. Job Summary Under the direction of the Director of the Strategic African and African American Retention Initiative (SAARI) and the Center for African Diaspora Academic Student Success (CADSS), the Academic Success Advisor position is the subject matter expert regarding all academic advising aspects of SAARI. The Academic Success Advisor will be responsible for providing academic interventions and identity-conscious support using data driven proactive outreach strategies. The Academic Success Advisor will encourage and facilitate student involvement and success in campus life, student organizations, academic excellence, and community engagement. The Academic Success Advisor will organize and provide leadership on all advising functions, confidential issues and materials involving interaction with university administrators, deans and faculty, staff, students, and the general public. In partnership with all academic advising units, the incumbent will work to implement campus-wide academic advising initiatives, Black Diaspora male academic success initiatives, and act as the representative of the unit in discussions with other student- oriented units, including all four undergraduate colleges. The position will support SAARI in providing culturally relevant opportunities in the areas of academic support and intervention, conflict resolution, career development, counseling, and advocacy for the Black Diaspora community on the UC Davis campus.
