DESCRIPTION

Unique among similar departments in the UC system and across the country, the Department of Literature is a community of scholars, critics, and writers working in a comparative, global, and interdisciplinary context. Faculty and students work in Spanish, English, French, Arabic, German, Russian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Latin and other world languages and literatures.

At the undergraduate level we currently offer four majors, World Literature, English, Spanish, and Literary Arts, and eleven different minors. At the graduate level, we offer programs for the PhD in English, Spanish, Comparative Literature, and Cultural Studies, as well as a Master in Fine Arts in Cross-Genre Writing.

Since our founding in the 1960s, we have been known for our innovative accomplishments in comparative, multilingual, transnational, interdisciplinary, and multi-media creativity, research, and teaching, as well as for our dedication to the studies of encounters, connections, and exchanges between cultures and societies from the antiquities to the present.

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) position plays a leadership role in all administrative functions in the Literature Department with delegated fiduciary responsibilities in maintaining business continuity in the department. The CAO has independent oversight of areas including budget and finance, academic personnel administration, human resources, facilities / space management, curriculum planning and student affairs administration, instructional support, and information systems. The CAO is a business leader with high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requiring analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure.

Reporting directly to the Chair with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Assistant Dean of Resource Administration in the School of Arts and Humanities, the CAO is responsible to develop, support and implement strategic, sound business and ethical practices within the department. Uses advanced administrative concepts and organization objectives to resolve complex issues.

The CAO is the principle advisor to the department chair regarding the development, implementation and assessment of short- and long-term planning models, risk assessment, and budgets and financial performance. Formulate, propose and implement business and management goals, policies and procedures to meet department, faculty and university objectives. Exercises leadership and discretionary authority to solve managerial and programmatic concerns; utilize a high degree of independence, ingenuity and analytical skills to resolve complex problems.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management.

  • Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in contract and grant administration. Knowledge of Federal and private funding regulations.

  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience in a large, complex department with proven ability to analyze, interpret and apply Management principles, practices and techniques in the conduct of business for a large multi-discipline, pubic and privately funded academic research department.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student affairs functions and educational support systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of development and public relations functions in an academic setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets including project budget costs, coordinate multiple projects, adapt programmatic objectives to changes in resources, establish priorities as affected by budgetary issues.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in space and facilities management including analysis, funding, design, construction and renovation of buildings and labs.

  • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
