Job Description:

UAlbany has recently received $75 million from New York State for the Albany Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Initiative (Albany AI). Through our signature strengths in cybersecurity, climate science, health sciences, and emergency preparedness, UAlbany is uniquely positioned to leverage this computing power to tackle some of society's biggest challenges. The University at Albany also recently conducted a large cluster hire of faculty positions in the broad area of artificial intelligence. These positions span the campus to include eight Schools and Colleges in 20 departments, and all faculty will be part of the University's newly developed AI Institute.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has great strength in all major areas of mathematics. It is also unique in that it has an established MS program in data science with enrollment of 90 students and is granting doctoral degrees in the area of data science. The faculty are supported by multiple grants from federal agencies such as NSF, NSA, and NASA, and have established collaborations with research centers and departments throughout the world.

The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks an Associate/ Full Professor with tenure in mathematics related to data science and AI.

Applicants are expected to have a substantial record of accomplishment in the theoretical aspects of data science. The new hire will be a member of the University's AI Institute. The successful candidate will provide evidence of expertise in AI and address how AI is integral to their research program.

An Associate/Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is expected to perform the following duties during their employment with the department.

Research: Play a leadership role in his/her field of expertise. Publish original research in well-recognized journals, present research results at professional meetings, has external funding to support their research, and supervise the research of Ph.D students.

Teaching: Teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Service: Membership in committees at the College and/or University level. More significant roles in the department and the AI Institute. Strong contributions to the profession (positions in professional societies, editorial membership, organization of professional meetings, expository articles and/books with national visibility, etc.).


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field, from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of artificial intelligence in their existing research program.
  • Record of research requisite for an appointment as Associate/Full Professor in mathematics related to data science and AI.
  • Applicants must have experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses areas related to data science and AI.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated research excellence, a solid external research funding record, and strong evidence of continuously obtaining external funding to support a robust research program in mathematics related to data science and AI.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong potential in interdisciplinary research and contribute to the university's AI initiative (see www.albany.edu/ai).
  • Applicants should currently hold the rank of a tenured Associate Professor or Professor, or may be an advanced Assistant Professor with exceptional qualifications that warrants eligibility for immediate review for promotion to Associate Professor
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

  • Strong potential of collaboration with existing faculty in the Department.
