The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (SD Mines) invites applications for one or more tenure-track faculty positions in Nanoscience & Biomedical Engineering at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.  Exceptional candidates who currently hold a tenured academic appointment may be considered for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, subject to SD Board of Regents approval. These positions will support PhD and MS programs in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (NANO) and Biomedical Engineering (BME), a newly offered certificate in quantum communications, and the recently ABET accredited BS program in Biomedical Engineering at South Dakota Mines. Candidates with research expertise in biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomechanics, imaging (including but not limited to bioimaging), and nanomaterials for quantum information science (QIS) are of particular interest.

These positions should complement ongoing efforts focusing on imaging enabled bioscience through the IMAGEN collaborative (Imaging Materials and Genetic Engineering) a statewide collaboration with a focus on cell-materials interactions and novel fluorescence based bioimaging; our participation in the MonArk quantum foundry, an NSF-funded center focused on the synthesis and characterization of 2D materials and rapidly-growing statewide efforts in Quantum Information Science. The successful candidate(s) will be provided a competitive salary and start-up package, and access to department laboratories and shared resources, including several state-of-the-art imaging, spectroscopy, and biotechnology laboratories and technical staff.

The selected candidates will be expected to contribute to South Dakota Mines’ Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and Biomedical Engineering program(s) by developing a robust extramurally funded research program, through teaching and development of courses relevant to Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and Biomedical Engineering, and through mentoring and advising of PhD, MS and BS students. Candidates with an interest in teaching engineering design principals and individuals with a research emphasis in nanomaterials and their interactions with living systems at the cellular level, the optical properties of quantum materials and especially candidates leveraging these topics with novel imaging methods are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must possess a PhD in a science or engineering discipline closely aligned with Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and/or Biomedical Engineering and one of the above-mentioned research emphases. The successful candidate will be a faculty member in Nanoscience & Biomedical Engineering, with an anticipated start date of August 2024. Email [email protected] for further information regarding this position.
