Job Description

This job posting is only open to current Arizona Board of Regents employees (Arizona State University, University of Arizona, or Northern Arizona University).

The Assistant Director position will be a vital leader for the Tempe campus and the Herberger Institute for Design
and the Arts (HIDA) in growing the Career Interest Community model and ensuring students are Career Ready
post-graduation. The Assistant Director is a leadership position responsible for facilitating and executing the
strategic vision for student's career and professional development across ASU, specifically focusing on how to
engage creative students from arts and design disciplines.

In partnership with Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Career Services staff will be supporting these
students with specialized career and internship development resources, programming, and events. This position
will work primarily out of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts offices on the Tempe campus, but will also be responsible for campus-wide initiatives, including the Downtown Phoenix location.

This position will report directly to the Director of Career Readiness and will have a dotted line to staff in Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA). In active collaboration with Career Services leadership across multiple campuses, the Assistant Director: supervises and leads a team of Creative Career Peers (student employees) works closely with academic departments, student professional organizations, community and industry partners, alumni and other entities that facilitate customized student career development at ASU co-creates strategic vision and facilitates implementation as HIDA scales to the Mesa, Downtown Phoenix and Los Angeles markets.

Essential Duties

Creative Career Education and Events

  • Identify and execute collaborative efforts with Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) academic schools in the development of customized career and professional development classes, assignments, programming, and events.
  • Design creative career development modules that can be integrated into HIDA course curriculum.
  • Advise students and alumni regarding their interests, values, skills and qualifications related to career decision making, entrepreneurial efforts and preparing and conducting an effective job search.
  • Develop programming with ASU students in LA, in collaboration with California staff members.
  • Development and creation of content for students and alumni in the gig economy.

Staff Supervision and Program Development

  • Collaborate in the recruiting, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating of small team of Creative Career Peers (student employees).
  • Develop Creative Career Peer work schedules and provide ongoing training and development opportunities.
  • Plan and lead weekly Creative Career Peer meetings, planning sessions and 1-1 updates.
  • Support and assist with facilitating customized developmental program and career preparation events led by Creative Career Peers.
  • Serve on leadership team for the entire Career Readiness team across all locations; including participating in and leading staff meetings, designing professional development opportunities, traveling to other locations for meetings, programs and other projects, leading project-based committees with staff from multiple locations.

Institutional & Departmental Leadership

  • Work with Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) leadership to design innovative approaches to scaling career readiness and work-related opportunities, including identifying potential industry partners, investors, and other collaborators across the higher education sector.
  • Assist with the direction of the Career Services department at Arizona State University, serving both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Support and promote the goals of the University, HIDA, EOSS, Career Services.
  • Assist in the preparation of departmental activity reports.
  • The Assistant Director will become knowledgeable and understand the current EOSS initiatives. They will be highly visible and support university functions, serving as a catalyst for mobilizing groups of students to events such as: Game Day Activities, Homecoming, Fall Welcome Events, Family Weekend and other campus traditions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field AND three years in a related area; OR, Bachelor's degree in a related field AND five years experience in a related area;  OR, Nine years of progressively responsible experience in a related area; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in an arts or design discipline, higher education or related degree AND three years of student services, creative organizational, college, state, or community career center, human resources, college relations or student advisement experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading and managing a related service department or office in either career, student affairs, or creative arts/design organization. (1 year)
  • Supervision experience of staff. (1 year)
  • Experience in maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of arts and design fields/disciplines.
  • Experience in presentations and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career development theory and practice.
  • Experience in using technology systems including Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Slack, PeopleSoft, and Handshake career management system.

Working Environment

  • Lifting and carrying materials, as well as, pulling and pushing carts of up to 30 pounds.
  • Additional movement requirements include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Sitting and standing for prolonged periods; 50% sitting; 25% standing; 25% walking.
  • Job location is primarily located at the Tempe campus; however, incumbent will be required to travel to Downtown Phoenix campus, as well as other campus locations as needed.
