The Assistant Director for Career Readiness for the Downtown Phoenix campus is a leadership position responsible for facilitating and executing the strategic vision for students’ career and professional development.  The Assistant Director position will be a vital leader; building and maintaining relationships with academic and student services units aimed at tailoring career resources and support to the unique career needs for students at the Downtown Phoenix location, as well as students in partner academic colleges at various locations. Academic partnerships will include Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the College of Health Solutions, and Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions.
This position will be responsible for leading strategy, as well as, a diverse team in a fast-paced, student centered, dynamic environment. The ideal candidate will be an organized self-starter who thrives on building innovative new relationships with staff and leadership across the university. The candidate will have strong relationship building abilities, be a sophisticated communicator and have direct experience recommending and implementing programs and services along with an ability to connect with students, staff, faculty, employers, and community partners.
This position will report directly to the Sr. Associate Director of Career Readiness. In active collaboration with Career Services leadership across multiple campuses, the Assistant Director:

  • Plans, develops and assists with directing operational and administrative activities of Career Services.
  • Supervises and leads a diverse staff team composed of professional and student staff.
  • Works closely with academic schools and departments, student professional organizations, community and industry partners, alumni and other entities that facilitate customized student career development, internship preparation, job placement and grad/professional school prep for ASU students.

Essential Duties

Institutional & Departmental Leadership

  • Work closely with leadership in academic colleges to design approaches and facilitate career exploration and preparation.
  • Develop relationships with external organizations and donors from a diversity of industries who are interested in hiring ASU students and alumni.  
  • Regularly records and reports on data related to assigned college appointments, event participation, student’s career engagement, employer’s recruiting and hiring, and career outcomes. 
  • Assist in the preparation of departmental activity reports and budget management.
  • Support and promote the goals of the University, Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS), and Career Services.
  • The Assistant Director will become knowledgeable and understand the current EOSS initiatives. They will be highly visible and support university functions, serving as a catalyst for mobilizing groups of students to events such as: Game Day Activities, Homecoming, Fall Welcome Events, Family Weekend and other campus traditions.
Career Education, Technology Integration and Events
  • Support staff to identify and execute collaborative efforts across academic colleges to deliver customized career and professional development courses, technology adoption, programming, and events.
  • Conduct ongoing research through benchmarking peer institutions, connecting with professional associations, and attending national conferences to understand and provide information about post-graduation opportunities for students.
  • Remain current on career resources, student preferences and workforce trends.
Staff Supervision and Development
  • Collaborate in the recruiting, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating a team of professional Career Advisors, Management Intern(s) and/or Career Peers (student employees).
  • Plan and lead regular staff meetings, planning sessions and 1-1 staff meetings.
  • Serve on the leadership team for the Career Readiness team across all locations; including participating in and leading staff meetings, designing professional development opportunities, traveling to other locations for meetings, programs and other projects, leading project-based committees with staff from multiple locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:  Career Services serves students and alumni in the office and at events that typically take place Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with additional evenings and weekends required based on events and high-season.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of Master’s degree in Counseling, Behavioral Science, Higher Education or related degree AND three years of college, state, or community career center, human resources, college relations or student advisement experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading and managing a student services department or office. (1 year)
  • Supervision experience of professional staff in a higher education setting. (1 year)
  • Proven success building and maintaining successful relationships.
  • Experience in presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career development theory and practice.
  • Evidence in using using technology systems including Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Slack, PeopleSoft, and Handshake career management system.

Working Environment

  • Lifting and carrying materials, as well as, pulling and pushing carts of up to 30 pounds.
  • Additional movement requirements include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Sitting and standing for prolonged periods; 50% sitting; 25% standing; 25% walking.
  • Job location is primarily located at the Downtown Phoenix campus; however, incumbent will be required to travel to other campus locations as needed.
