Job Description

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising, the Academic Success Advisor is primarily responsible for developing relationships with our students to help them be successful in their academic goals and degree completion. The Academic Success Advisor supports their students through a range of in-person and virtual methods including individual advising meetings (in-person, phone, and Zoom), email, classroom instruction (if applicable) and other proactive outreach strategies utilizing technology tools to support student success.

Salary Range

$45,000 - $50,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Provides 1:1 academic advising, recruitment/retention, and academic support functions to students in the School of Life Sciences undergraduate, campus-based degree programs, to ensure successful progress to degree completion through student appointments, emails, and outreach campaigns.
  • Works closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to degree selection, extracurricular activities, study abroad opportunities, undergraduate research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selecting options best suited to student's goals, interests and skills.
  • Communicates with stakeholders via in-person, Zoom, and phone appointments, as well as administratively through Salesforce and email.
  • Assists with academic program development and implementation.
  • Monitors student academic progress through a variety of reporting tools including eAdvisor, degree audits, major maps, and advisor portal; works closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to ensure academic success.
  • Working under minimal supervision, implements problem-solving strategies, investigates solutions, identifies resources, and provides holistic guidance and advice to students.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to student enrollment, registration, orientation, and degree completion.
  • Primary liaison connecting students with academic and personal resources including, but not limited to tutoring, counseling, accessibility services, and career services. 
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with academic units and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a master’s degree in counseling, health sciences, communications, or related field.
  • Experience utilizing a holistic approach to student growth and development practices.
  • Experience in Admissions, student retention, or student services.
  • Experience advising in on-campus and remote environments.
  • Experience using Salesforce or email communication with students.
  • Experience with Google Drive services and applications.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • This position receives regular review of objectives by department administrator.
