The University’s Research and Innovation Services (RIS) forms a key component in the delivery of the University of Dundee strategy, and its associated ambitions for growing its research and enterprise portfolio. RIS is a central function, supporting, enabling, and promoting all aspects of research, impact, economic development, commercialisation and innovation across our academic community and external stakeholders. Working in partnership we deliver the University and Schools’ strategic priorities creating an inclusive research culture where everyone can thrive, excel, and contribute to grow our excellence in research, innovation, and impact regionally, nationally, and globally. Our goal is informing and driving the delivery of our enabling-strategies for “Research with Impact” and “Enterprise & Engagement”.

RIS is expanding, and we are building a small new Strategic Research Development Unit. The Unit is created to provide strategic intelligence to the University’s research leaders through continuous analysis of the wide influencers and drivers of investment in research, from government policy (Scottish, UK, and International), funders’ strategies (UK and International, to global market trends. SRDT will also be responsible for initiating, developing and project managing the University’s cross institutional multi- million strategic bids.

We have an exciting opening for a Strategic Research Development Manager (Global). We are looking for experienced, pro-active, professionals with excellent influencing, analytical and communication skills, and a proven track record in research development.

Key priorities include:

  • Develop and maintain close relationship with, facilitate, and support informed direct relationships with and between global funders, international organisations, policy makers and key University personnel for the purposes of influencing global research strategies/programmes and funding opportunities, in preference to merely responding to those opportunities.
  • Identify areas of significant strength in the University and develop short-, medium- and long-term plans for strategic international research funding and investment (incl. EU) to support and grow such areas.
  • Identify and maximise potential new strategic international research funding opportunities and streams for the University (e.g. NIH and International Foundations).
  • Design and deliver projects to enable the academic community in the University to respond to global strategic opportunities effectively, such as pre-bid consortia building with internal and external stakeholders as well as project manage and develop bids in response to relevant calls.
  • Develop proposals and business cases to secure major international institutional investments for research, priming and growing the University of Dundee research capacity.

Who are we looking for?

  • A professional qualified to degree level, or equivalent, preferably in the area of Science / Engineering / Medicine.
  • A strategic and creative thinker with proven experience in identifying and driving new opportunities.
  • Experience within the Higher Education sector, funding body or demonstrable relevant experience in a research funding environment.
  • Proven track-record of successfully initiating and supporting the development of strategic collaborations to secure large competitive funding.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the UK and International research and innovation funding environment.
  • Proven experience of developing and negotiating partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of data sourcing and quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-functional teams with academic and professional services staff, and external partners, at all levels and across a wide range of disciplines.
