Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate (RA) position within the Control and Power Research Group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The RA will contribute to the technical effort on modelling and control of power systems with high shares of inverter-based resources (IBRs), with a particular focus on system stability. The post is supported by the Global Centre on Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-free Society (EPICS) involving multiple institutions across Australia, UK and US and working closely with the Global Power System Transformation Consortium (G-PST) . We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

Duties and responsibilities

The RA is expected to 1) develop a methodology for analysing the stability of power systems with high penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) and with incomplete knowledge about the system model; 2) develop a methodology to trace the root-causes of observed oscillations.

The RA will also be responsible for the dissemination of research outputs in academic journals and international conferences and for presenting project updates at regular meetings with UK and global partners of EPICS and G-PST. Involvement in teaching activities is not mandatory but there will be teaching opportunities (e.g. UG and PG supervision) during the project.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in electrical engineering, control, physics, or mathematics, with a focus on system stability, particularly the stability of distributed systems with incomplete information about the system model. Familiarity with stability problems of power systems with high shares of IBRs would be an advantage. Excellent verbal communication skills are also required, together with the ability to deal with a wide range of people and to write clearly for academic and non-academic audiences.

Further Information

The post is for up to 28 months in the first instance at 100%FTE.
