We are seeking a Lead Manufacturing Engineer to join and provide leadership to an expanding electrical machines manufacturing team that supply to the automotive and aerospace sectors. The role builds on the successful development of industrialization programmes in the Driving the Electric Revolution industry challenge where a number of low volume pilot manufacturing and assembly lines for electrical propulsion systems have been developed. The lines predominantly consists of automated advanced wire/coil forming machines including hairpin forming machines, semi-automated assembly stations and laser stations for stripping and joining.    

The role holder will oversee the implementation of engineering improvements and capability projects to ensure the advancement of these pilot lines. This will include the design, development and maintenance of automated / standalone manufacturing processes and equipment, jigs and fixtures etc. to meet project requirements and safety standards. They will be leading a manufacturing team to develop and run these lines and to ensure targets and strategic growth goals are met.  

The role holder will help lead and implement manufacturing plans and have the opportunity to develop new industry-leading manufacturing processes to make electrical machines and propulsion systems reliable and efficient enough to drive electrification of transport.   

Given the infancy of the manufacturing line the role holder will be expected to have strong technical problem-solving skills as well as an aptitude to innovation and implement continuous improvement solutions. The role holder will be responsible for leading the design and implementation of mechanical and software changes to improve the machines. The role holder will also work closely with the R&D team to support the development of new designs based on the pilot line capabilities.   

The role holder will be required to respond to any production issues as they arise, and they will be expected to drive lean manufacturing initiatives and the implementation of effective, corrective and preventative actions.  

Candidates should have a degree in manufacturing, industrial, or mechanical engineering or equivalent experience. 

The post will be offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed term contract for 24 months, with possible continuation subject to funding. Job share arrangements may be considered.
