The Department of Biomedicine is a joint effort between the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop pioneering therapies benefiting the lives of patients in areas of unmet need. With more than 70 research groups and 900 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University. We are located in the heart of Basel across 6 different locations. The Microscopy Core Facility of the Departement of Biomedicine at the University of Basel is a state-of-the-art scientific platform offering DBM researchers instrumentation and technical and scientific expertise. As the only Nikon Center of Excellence in Switzerland, we foster a close collaboration with Nikon.
The facility is based in two sites and is providing more than 30 instruments ranging from confocal, widefield, high-content screening, two-photon, super-resolution, stereo as well as laser micro dissection microscopes.
With a young and dynamic team of five people we contribute to many translational and basic research projects, enabling the successful application of diverse microscopy techniques and image analysis projects.
The successful candidate will be hired 50% on a permanent University position (after one year evaluation period) and 20% on a limited yearly contract with funding from a collaboration with the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology (IOB). The place of work will therefore be at both institutes.
- Consult researchers for the planning and analysis of their microscopy experiments and support them during the process.
- Theoretical and practical training of users.
- First level maintenance and troubleshooting of a variety of instruments including widefield, confocal, spinning disk, 2-photon and high content screening microscopes.
- Development of new applications as well as solutions for image processing and analysis.
- Support in image analysis projects.
- Manage and document knowledge in the facility database.
- Master or PhD in life sciences with several years of professional experience in biology, physics, biophysics or a related field with a strong focus on microscopy.
- 3-5 years of work experience in the field of light microscopy including hardware and software.
- Excellent knowledge of principles and methods of microscopy (including fluorescence, confocal and 2-photon microscopy, properties of light sources and detectors).
- Good skills in handling optics, microscopy hardware and software.
- Experience in image analysis with commercial and open source software, programming skills are an advantage.
- A sense for data handling and management.
- High degree of motivation and self-reliance combined with excellent organizational and team-work skills.
- A strong sense for diligence and accuracy.
- Experience in user training and a service oriented mindset.
- Excellent communication skills and fluency in English, German is an advantage.
