The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the aim to advance knowledge about challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global setting. Research at the department is focused on how different societal and individual factors affect population health, and to develop and evaluate structural and individual-oriented interventions. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national, and international levels. The department has 12 research groups, about 110 PhD students and about 140 employees.

Danderyd Hospital has one of Sweden's largest emergency departments with 90,000 visits in year 2022 and approximately 50,000 care episodes per year. There are significant opportunities for research in the field of internal medicine, especially focusing on elderly patients, as well as people with foreign background, who constitute an increasing part of the patients.

Description of the subject area

Global medicine is a multidisciplinary field within the broader subject of global health, Global medicine encompasses the study of non-communicable diseases, focusing on health and well-being of populations around the world. It covers various aspects of healthcare, medical research, and public health. As the field covers a wide range of diseases, the focus is on common factors such as risk factors and the structure of healthcare systems to address diseases, and the transfer of knowledge between countries. A crucial aspect involves research and education about causes of diseases among populations at different income levels globally. The subject also includes research on both prevention and healthcare with the goal to ensure that all individuals have possibility to achieve the best possible health and have proper access to healthcare. A variety of methods, often used in combination, are used in the field, including epidemiological methods, interventions, implementation research, health economic evaluation, qualitative methods, policy research, as well as clinical and laboratory research.

Your mission

You will lead and drive the research within global medicine to build a strong and competitive research environment. You will actively apply for research grants, and maintain a close collaboration with both Swedish and international stakeholders within the field of global medicine. The position also includes supervision of PhD students and postdoc researchers and to participate in planning and teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels.

The employment is combined with a clinical employment as at least a specialist trained physician in internal medicine at Danderyd hospital. The clinical position amount to 30 percent. This means that you are expected to take on a coordinating role within education involving global health at KI and Danderyd hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

You must be an internationally recognized researcher within the research field with scientific findings where your own efforts has been significant, and with a research plan of high quality that clearly shows global health challenges. You should further have leadership experience within the area and have obtained research funding in competition. Furthermore, you must have extensive experience in teaching at undergraduate and advanced level as well as supervision of students at undergraduate and advanced level as well as PhD level. 

You must be familiar with epidemiologic study design as well as interdisciplinary research with translational approach. You must have experience of working both in high-income countries and in low- and middle-income countries.

The position will be combined with a position as at least a specialist trained physician in global medicine within the area of Internal medicine and infections, Danderyd hospital. Therefore, you must have an MD with specialist competence in internal medicine, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Since the position includes clinical work, the applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria 

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. In the assessment of applicants, we put special weight on scientific competence within the area. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (1).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have shown

  • Documented experience of clinical work in low-income countries,
  • Documented experience in research collaboration in low-income and middle-income countries.
  • Documented experience in communication of research to the surrounding society.

It is meritorious that you have shown

  • Good knowledge of other languages besides Swedish and English, such as Arabic, French, Portuguese or Spanish.

You shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
