The Unit of Integrative Epidemiology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine is looking for a part-time research specialist (20%). A main goal of our research is to improve the understanding of the relationship between mental disorders (e.g., psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders) and somatic conditions (e.g., cancer and infectious diseases) in terms of disease burden, intervention uptake, and patient outcomes. We offer an engaging and scientific environment where you will have the opportunity to collaborate within an interdisciplinary research group.
Description of the subject area
Mental disorders belong to the most common morbidities in our society and have only in the last decade been recognized to cause significant health disparities. This research will focus on comparing the risk of somatic conditions, primarily cancer and infectious diseases, in populations with and without mental disorders. The candidate will help to gather insight on clinical characteristics, treatment and healthcare utilization patterns, and survival outcomes among individuals with mental disorders with or without such comorbidities. This research will be carried out by a series of epidemiological studies using registry and cohort data in Sweden and beyond.
Your mission
The candidate will be responsible for project coordination (e.g., facilitating data acquisition processes, including the application for ethical permits and database access, and coordinating the research team), data analysis, result dissemination, manuscript writing, and supervision of junior researchers. The candidate should have a strong background in epidemiology and data analysis, and should show great interest and experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research groups and performing tasks between different sectors (e.g., research institutions, health care sectors, and industries).
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.
The candidate is expected to have:
- Great experience in using population-based health register and cohort data for research
- Strong statistical programing skills, i.e., SAS, Stata, R.
- Advanced experience in project coordination and data management
- Excellence in written and verbal communication using English
- Attention to detail, problem solving ability and social skills are highly valuable
- Knowledgeable regarding GDPR rules and legal regulations
- Willing to take responsibility in leadership work
Assessment criteria
This position has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).
We put particular emphasis on research quality and future potential of conducting cutting-edge research in psychiatric epidemiology, with a focus on the comorbidity between mental disorders and somatic conditions. Working experience in different sectors is particularly meritorious and will be considered when applicable.
