Postdoctoral Researcher in Pathology

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

At the Department of Pathology, diseases are studied at the organ, tissue, cell and molecular level. Currently, Mikael Björnstedt's research group is looking for a postdoctoral Researcher to study selenium compounds as cancer therapy.  

As a postdoctoral Researcher in Mikael Björnstedt's research group, you will study selenium compounds as cancer therapy. Within our research area, translational and clinical studies are conducted focusing on redox-active selenium compounds as chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer. Main areas of interest are clinical studies to study the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, safety and efficacy of selenium compounds in the treatment of cancer. Mechanistic studies to study the effect of selenium compounds and how improvement can occur through a combination of treatments as well as studies focused on drug action and how selenium compounds exert their cytotoxic action.

Primary tasks included in the role are:

• Management of own research projects
• Teaching and supervision of junior staff
• Writing and publishing scientific papers

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

What qualifications are required for the position?

• PhD with a strong background in Medical Biotechnology, Pathology and Cancer Therapy
• Extensive experience and expertise in selenium compounds, molecular biology, transcriptomics, flow cytometry, enzyme kinetics, protein expression and purification, cell death assays and antiproliferative studies
• Experience in ex vivo models
• Proven scientific productivity with publications in peer-review journals
• Ability to communicate fluently in spoken and written English 

The following experience is meritorious:

• Experience working with lipid nanoparticles
• Experience with IHC is an advantage
