WE ARE

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society. 

The current vacancy is with the Unit Economic and Financial Resilience of the Directorate for Fair and Sustainable Economy. The unit contributes to the development of European Union policies based on top-class research on economic and financial resilience.

The Unit provides scientific evidence to support policy making in the areas of: macroeconomic surveillance and forecasting; sustainable and digital finance, financial stability; analysis of foreign direct investments and multinational enterprises; wellbeing, fairness and resilience.

In its efforts to consolidate efforts on using models and data to assess financial risks and opportunities related to digitalization, sustainability and climate-related policy, the Unit is looking for a researcher with strong quantitative skills and a solid expertise in data analysis, modelling and econometrics applied to finance (broadly defined), notably including banking, insurance and financial markets.

WE PROPOSE

The new colleague will develop quantitative analyses on current and emerging topics in financial regulation, financial stability and corporate finance, notably including digital and sustainable finance, for the purpose of informing and supporting the policy process within the Commission.

He/she will:

  • work in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, with a visible impact on policy and society in Europe and beyond;
  • closely cooperate with policy Directorates-General in the Commission and other international institutions to analyse topics related to a fair and sustainable economy and formulate options addressing the Commission priorities;
  • focus on generating new evidence on sustainable and digital finance, based on high quality research;
  • act as science-to-policy interlocutors between the scientific community and policymakers.

Skills/Qualifications

WE LOOK FOR

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with strong quantitative skills and a solid expertise in data analysis, modelling and econometrics applied to finance (broadly defined), notably including banking, insurance and financial markets.

The ideal candidate must have (essential requirements):

  • Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies;
  • Background in Finance/Economics with experience in quantitative analyses, modelling and econometrics, including strong data analysis background, proven by studies or research based on the use of data and statistical methods;
  • Experience in conducting research on relevant topics, such as: banking and finance, financial markets, financial regulation or systemic risk;
  • Good knowledge of one or more statistical and computational modeling tools, including programming, such as: Matlab, Stata, R …;
  • Thorough knowledge of spoken and written English (C1), including the ability to write technical and/or policy reports;

The ideal candidate should have (desirable):

  • Advanced programming and solutions deployment skills in at least one of the following: Matlab, R, Python, Julia;
  • Experience in working with market data and/or micro data on companies (including banks);
  • Experience in working with large/mixed datasets.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate:

  • Commitment, motivation and proactivity in pursuing projects;
  • Ability to work independently, including the effective management of own workload, and also as a part of a team;
  • Ability to identify and focus on the essential elements of issues and processes so as to achieve established goals efficiently;
  • Ability to adapt to changing plans and priorities.
