Scientific researcher in the department "Reservoir geophysics"

Updated: 23 days ago
Location: Bochum, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG conducts research at eight locations in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy and sector coupling for a successful energy transition. Our research institute conducts applied research, develops innovative technologies for public and industrial clients and translates these into marketable products and processes.

The EU-funded GeoHEAT project aims to revolutionize geothermal exploration through two key strategic changes. Firstly, the financial burden prior to drilling will be significantly reduced through innovative methods, while potential risks will be accurately assessed and transparently communicated. Secondly, the efficiency of the learning processes during exploration drilling will be increased in order to significantly reduce the costs of geological characterization.

Within the “Reservoir Geophysics” department, two specific sub-areas are being worked on: Passive seismic methods are being further developed and used in a targeted manner to precisely record and analyze geological structures. In addition, drill cuttings are digitized and then evaluated using modern numerical techniques in order to obtain detailed geological information.

Through these measures, GeoHEAT contributes to making geothermal exploration more efficient, cost-effective and less risky.
