Course Number and Title: FAH351H1F Black Art in North America

Course Description: This introductory course will survey the interrelated history of Blackness and artistic production in the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Canada. Starting in the eighteenth century with the advent of the transatlantic slave trade and covering up to the Black Lives Matter movement, the course proceeds chronologically and considers the Black Art within its larger social context. By discussing the aesthetic qualities of artworks and the careers of Black artists alongside the history of anti-Black racism in North America, we will explore both how the visual has been used as a tool of domination and how art can challenge or subvert racist ideologies. At the end of the course, students will be familiar with the primary figures, debates, and works of art that constitute the field. They will also be comfortable discussing the history of anti-Black racism and its current manifestations. Topics include: the visual culture of slavery and abolition, hemispheric and transatlantic modernisms, the racial politics of "outsider" and "folk" art, the Black Arts Movement, and art and mass incarceration.

Sessional dates of appointment: May 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024; Final Assessment period June 19-24, 2024.

Salary: 

• Sessional Lecturer I $9,457.90
• Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term $9,930.79
• Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
• Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

• MA in Art History is required; PhD in Art History is strongly preferred
• Knowledge of Black Art in North America, including primary figures, debates, and works of art that constitute the field, is required.
• At least 3 years of experience marking undergraduate essays in art history.
• Evidence of recent teaching effectiveness..

Preferred qualifications: 

• Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.

Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including: delivering two 2-hour lectures per week; developing syllabus and marking scheme; setting and invigilating term tests and final examination / assessment; grading and reporting of final grades; availability in office hours for academic counseling of students; answer queries by email or appointment.
