Your opportunity:

As a Financial Assistant, you will be working closely with the various departments across UTM to ensure business transactions are aligned with the general accepted accounting principles, the University’s financial and purchasing guidelines as well as funding policies. You will bring a strong understanding of financial management, analysis and auditing, and a high degree of professionalism and customer service to facilitate the achievement of these goals.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and/or processing journal entries
  • Generating standard financial reports
  • Processing expense reimbursements
  • Identifying and resolving individual financial discrepancies
  • Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience including recording financial transactions (accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries) using a computerized information system.
  • Experience dealing with a large volume of transactions, customer service, and responding to inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated high level of attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy under pressure of deadlines.
  • Solid understanding of accounting, purchasing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, internal controls, and HST.
  • Good understanding of the concepts involved in forecasting and variance analysis, and internal recoveries.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial accounting, management accounting, accounting software applications, and finance & business communications.
  • Ability to quickly master system skills, including ability to quickly gain a good understanding of systems
  • Substantial working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel is essential, including the ability to consolidate and link multiple spreadsheets and to use advanced functions and formulas.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and also collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Highly professional approach, use of tact, superior organizational skills, ability to work with minimal error under pressure, good judgment, initiative, flexibility, ability to deal in an effective and cooperative manner with a variety of people.

USW Pay Band 09 -- $65,407 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $83,646. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
