Your opportunity:

The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is the largest academic department of family and community medicine in the world. Our 2,000-strong faculty of teachers and researchers are recognized internationally for excellence in teaching, research, and clinical care. Together, we are breaking new ground in comprehensive primary care, from office-based family practice to emergency medicine, palliative care, care of the elderly, mental health, Indigenous health, and more.

As Communications Officer, you will work closely with the Senior Communications Strategist to highlight the educational, research, clinical, and health policy work of DFCM. You will draft engaging and empowering narratives through social, digital and print media, infographics, and other knowledge translation products that promote various initiatives and programs within DFCM. Collaborating with the Senior Communications Strategist, you will support faculty with news, feature stories and weekly announcements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting and editing content for print and/or online communications channels
  • Consulting with and advising clients on the development of design specifications and briefs
  • Analyzing and recommending options for the development of visual expression/layout of digital assets
  • Tracking and monitoring digital communications activities
  • Producing promotional and outreach materials
  • Designing graphics for presentations and reports
  • Creating and editing web pages with interactive media
  • Disseminating information via social media

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing or a related field or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum four (4) years related experience in a communications role
  • Proven experience writing creative and engaging communication pieces (i.e. news and feature stories) including editing, researching, print/design and reporting
  • Experience managing social media platforms including building active engagement, expanding reach and using analytics
  • Experience maintaining and updating websites, and in the design and product development of website
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office Suite, content management systems and experience with new/emerging media and information technology
  • Proven design capabilities and experience with web and graphic design software (InDesign, Photoshop Illustrator)
  • Superb communication skills and the ability to foster positive relations in a decentralized environment
  • Exceptional storytelling and presentation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and solid copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload, work effectively under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Strong team player who values collaboration

USW Pay Band 09 -- $65,407 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $83,646. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
