The university is seeking to employ a Laboratory Engineer at a HEO 5 or 6 level to join the newly appointed research team working on two parallel themes of an ARC Discovery Project under the guidance of Prof. Itai Einav. The first theme will develop and characterise novel paradigm of deformable sensors for geotechnical engineering purposes, to measure stresses underground. The second theme will advance those stress sensors to facilitate the perception of soft underground robotics of their surroundings.
The chosen candidate will work closely with the research team to support the technical progress of two PhD research students. They will also support the large experimental component of the project, and the specific requirements in terms of electrical and electronic skills. In particular, they will closely work with the team to help design and prototype the novel stress sensors. The incumbent will be in charge of constructing the sensor prototypes, soldering the electronics, integrating them with supplementary temperature and humidity sensors where needed, as well as building the simple robot heads, and integrating all the pieces together. Given their critical part in the team, the incumbent is expected to have excellent experience in electronic and robotic, and experience in sensor development, characterisation and data acquisition.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
Provide support in the laboratory and field
design and undertake experiments in collaboration with researchers and other technical staff
support operations
collect and analyse qualitative of data
ensure work, health and safety standards are observed
resolve routine matters related to responsibilities and help resolve more complex matters
analyse qualitative and quantitative tests by recording and processing relevant data
provide technical support and research assistance to staff, students, researchers, and other technical staff in the laboratory.
About you:
Bachelor’s degree in robotics, electronics or related field OR equivalent work experience
attention to detail
proven experience and background in robotics and or electronics
computer literacy, including experience with Python, MATLAB, C++ or other programming language will come highly regarded
demonstrated experience in a similar role in a laboratory environment
demonstrated experience or exposure to data acquisition and/or statistical analysis programs
experience or technical knowledge in research methodologies.
