About the Role

Reporting to the Manager: Systems Infrastructure, The Information Technologist: Systems Administrator is required to work autonomously using sophisticated software to monitor critical servers, rectify issues with server and storage systems and build new servers. In addition, they support technologies such as clustering and load balancing which provide the ability to maintain high levels of system availability. They need to diagnose access, permission and security issues related to shared file resources. 

All staff in the Systems Infrastructure team are expected to cross skill and operate across all supported platforms depending on business requirements.

About UNiSA Information Strategy and Technology Services
Information Strategy and Technology Services (ISTS), which has the primary strategic and operational responsibility for the provision of the UniSA’s considerable IT infrastructure and services has approximately 180 staff in 9 key areas.

The University’s Systems Infrastructure environment provides the underlying resources for access and identity, shared file systems, corporate systems, data management and disaster recovery. In addition the Systems Infrastructure team are responsible for the administration and support of core infrastructure applications including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, Server Anti-Virus, Student and Staff Email (Office 365 and Exchange) and Anti-Spam.

The University’s IT infrastructure is required to be operational 24 hours per day x 365 days per year where possible. Systems Infrastructure staff are responsible for ensuring that the IT infrastructure supporting the University’s business critical systems functions correctly and provides adequate performance to maintain productivity for end-users. Systems Infrastructure staff use their excellent customer service skills when liaising directly with key stakeholders including staff and students.

A Systems Administrator in the Systems Infrastructure team provides broad weekly objectives for their workflow, uses their own technical skills to complete tasks, solve significant infrastructure problems and complete small projects. They seek further technical guidance from senior team members only when their activities have a major impact to the University. They make significant contributions to team project work, recommend improvements and specialise in at least one major aspect of the systems infrastructure environment as defined in the specific duties.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (normally a degree) or demonstrated equivalent knowledge experience and skills and a commitment to ongoing professional development
  • High level experience in the implementation of operating system and application level security in a complex information technology environment which integrates with the network architecture
  • Extensive experience supporting and documenting infrastructure technologies associated with server and storage configuration and deployment including clustering, server load balancing, continuous operations, monitoring and disaster recovery, automated system builds, virtual machines and capacity planning
  • Significant experience in and commitment to, a high level of customer service and to working collaboratively in a team based work environment, including verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully communicate with a diverse range of people at all levels
  • High level knowledge and experience in the management of server virtualisation technologies
