- Description
- The Deer-Forest Study (https://deer.psu.edu) is a long-term research project on the effects of deer herbivory, soil conditions, and competing vegetation on forest understory plant communities. The project began in 2013 and has been monitoring deer populations using spatial capture-recapture and distance sampling methods, as well as collecting demographic information on survival and harvest rates. The student will develop an integrated population model that can be used to evaluate the effects of changes in harvest allocations on deer density and the response of forest vegetation. The student will be part of an interdisciplinary team that includes PhD and MS students in soils, forestry, and human dimensions.
- Qualifications
- Requires a M.S. degree and seeking a candidate with strong quantitative skills. The student will develop integrated population models that can be applied at different spatial scales: 1) 20-40 sq miles using data collected for the Deer-Forest Study, and 2) wildlife management units used by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for deer management statewide. Each model will use slightly different data in the IPM but long-term (7-20 years) datasets are available. An interest in applying quantitative methods for assessing population status is essential. To apply, send a single pdf document that contains a cover letter, CV, contact information for 3 references, and unofficial copies of your transcripts to Duane Diefenbach at [email protected]
