The UMFA is committed to diversity and equal opportunity and encourages applications from people who self-identify as minorities or members of underrepresented groups. The Exhibitions Assistant will help to advance the UMFA’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) across all aspects of the Museum’s work, and to being a museum where our communities find themselves represented, welcomed, engaged, and heard.

This position will require the student to conduct gallery maintenance and object cleanings on a variety of materials on exhibition. Maintenance includes dusting, vacuuming, and mopping of museum galleries, dusting of art objects, cleaning of plexi-glass cases and other miscellaneous tasks throughout the galleries as needed. Outside of maintenance, the student will assist with preventive conservation tasks throughout the museum, including integrated pest management duties and environmental monitoring duties. In addition to this work, the student will be required to do readings on the materials they will be working with to gain a better understanding of museum best practices for collections care and exhibition maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

This position is ideal for students looking for an opportunity to learn more about museum collections care and preservation, and/or students who may be looking into graduate programs in museum studies, preservation studies, or conservation. The student will have had prior museum/art gallery experience and will be able to commit at least ten hours to the museum weekly. She/he must have the ability to lift 50 pounds from floor to waist and have a moderate level of manual dexterity.
