Description
We are hiring another permanent GS-11 Geneticist at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Southwestern Native Aquatic Resources and Recovery Center located in Dexter, New Mexico. The town of Dexter is a small agricultural community located approximately 20 miles from Roswell, NM, where most Center staff currently live. We are approximately 3 to 3.5 hours from several major cities (Albuquerque, NM; Santa Fe, NM; El Paso, TX; Lubbock, TX). Our lab has an increasing number of projects that utilize Illumina sequencing technology (GTseq; RADseq; metabarcoding; other Illumina applications). Consequently, we want to recruit people with relevant experience conducting library preparation for various Illumina sequencing applications, and experience analyzing Illumina (or similar) data. We have Illumina MiSeq and ABI 3500XL sequencers on station. Primarily, we perform a lot of population genetic studies on threatened and endangered fishes of the desert southwest. However, we have recently done studies on other aquatic species (aquatic plants and freshwater mussels) and terrestrial species. We also have an eDNA cleanroom that was installed two years ago; however, we do not currently have any active eDNA projects. The job announcements opened this morning on USAJobs, and will be available until 11:59 PM Eastern time on January 14, 2022. Both announcements are for the same position (i.e., government-wide and public applicant links): https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/625952300 (government-wide) https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/625952600 (public)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualification (you must possess one of the following): A. I have one year of professional experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: operating specialized molecular population genetics laboratory equipment such as thermal cyclers, automated DNA sequencers, and centrifuges; experience and skill in molecular genetic techniques including DNA extraction and PCR amplification of DNA; using genetic concepts and principles to conduct studies using common molecular genetics methods of population assignment, species identification, parentage assessment, and population structure. OR B. I have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or have successfully completed 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. in genetics or another closely related field which places sufficient emphasis on genetics and which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. You must upload a copy of your transcript. OR C. I have less than one-year of experience as described in "A", and I have not completed my graduate level education as described in "B". However, I have a combination of experience and graduate level education that, when combined, equals at least 100% of the total requirement. (Please note that only graduate education in excess of the first two years may be used in this calculation.) You must upload a copy of your transcript. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
