USFS Office/Lab and Location: A postgraduate Experienced Scholar research opportunity in forest resource economics is available with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Research and Development (USFS R&D) located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Research Project: The participant will conduct research into the structure and spatial arrangement of timber markets, particularly on how markets for timber on national forests managed by the USDA Forest Service relate to national and international markets. Learning Objectives: The research will involve learning how to assemble and analyze fine-scale national forest timber sale data sets, regional and national time series price data, and international (import, export) time series data; carrying out novel and established advanced econometric statistical modeling to evaluate price relationships at multiple spatial scales; and evaluating how to connect national forest timber sales feasibility to regional, national, and global market phenomena in a way that can be used in global forest sector models. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2021. Start date is flexible and negotiable, and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be extended upon recommendation of USFS and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Participants do not become employees of USDA, USFS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a doctorate in one of the fields listed under Eligibility Requirements. Preferred candidates will have a background or knowledge that includes BOTH (1) forestry, natural resources, or agriculture; AND (2) social science, economics or public policy. Preferred skills/experience: - Experience with both qualitative and quantitative research approaches - Experience utilizing publicly-available data sets - Experience estimating advanced econometric models, including those involving data of various time series generation processes - Knowledge of forest management and/or public land management - Intermediate knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) applications
