General Description of Position:

The TRIO Student Support Services program at Ivy Tech Richmond is currently seeking qualified applicants to tutor in Mathematics.

Major Responsibilities: Provide individual and group tutoring for TRIO students by walk-in or scheduled appointments. These appointments will be either in person or virtual.
Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, ability and experience
Provide subject-specific content to help students
Clarify course content
Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress
Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences
Support students in the development of appropriate research and study strategies
Use feedback and reflection to improve practice
Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful and self-directed learners
Maintain and submit weekly reports of services provided
Report to the TRIO program information about student progress
Minimum Qualifications:

Must provide evidence of proficiency in Quantitative Reasoning (MATH 123) as indicated by earning an A or B in the course with a recommendation from the appropriate faculty member for the course
Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
Must attend a TRIO Student Support Services training session
Show sensitivity to the needs of disadvantaged populations
Demonstrate an ability to interact effectively with diverse population
Must commit to working between 4 to 12 hours per week during our established hours Monday-Saturday 9 am to 7 pm

Preferred Qualifications:

Proficiency in Applied Technical Mathematics (MATH 122) as indicated by earning an A or B in the course with a recommendation from the appropriate faculty member for the course
Proficiency in College Algebra (MATH 136) or higher as indicated by earning an A or B in the course with a recommendation from the appropriate faculty member for the course

Prior tutoring or teaching experience

Other Requirements:

Selected candidate for employment will be subject to pre-employment background checks, including criminal history check, and any offer of employment will be contingent upon that outcome. Official transcripts required upon hiring.

Work Hours:

Must commit to working between 4 to 12 hours per week during our established hours Monday-Saturday 9 am to 7 pm
