TURNER ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CLINIC FELLOWSHIP
2022-2024 POSTGRADUATE FELLOW
The Turner Environmental Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law (“Turner Clinic”) is seeking applications for its 2022-2024 Postgraduate Environmental Law Fellowship. The fellowship is offered as a two-year position, with the possibility of renewal for an additional one-year term.
Fellowship Description: The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a recent law school graduate to grow as an effective environmental advocate, while fighting for clean and sustainable energy, promoting regenerative agriculture and local food systems, and protecting our natural resources and communities. The fellowship focuses on training influential attorneys and academics specializing in public interest environmental law. It also provides intensive opportunities to develop clinical education skills.
Fellowship Responsibilities: The fellow will work closely with Turner Clinic faculty and staff, and will report directly to the Director of the Turner Clinic. The fellow will assist with legal research, litigation, transactional negotiations, policy development, capacity-building, community partnerships, teaching and supervision of clinical students, and advocacy in furtherance of the Turner Clinic’s mission. The responsibilities of the fellow will include, at a minimum:
- Supervising students and providing skills instruction in the Turner Clinic, and occasional teaching in related environmental law classes.
- Representing the Turner Clinic’s clients in complex civil litigation, transactional, and policy matters, while working closely with co-counsel, expert witnesses, community leaders, and government officials.
- Researching and writing articles, policy papers, or other approved writing projects of publishable quality on topics related to environmental law.
- Leading and participating in ongoing environmental advocacy efforts.
- Collaborating with Turner Clinic faculty on environmental law and research projects.
- Representing the Turner Clinic in advocacy coalitions, strategic partnerships, and community engagement events and activities.
- Developing independent areas of interest, consistent with the mission of the Turner Clinic.
Qualifications: Priority will be given to law school graduates within three years of law school graduation who have a demonstrated interest in public interest environmental law; strong research and writing skills; and environmental litigation, transactional, policy, or advocacy experience. Candidates must be able to exercise independent judgment about the priority issues and critical relationships of central concern to the Turner Clinic; responsibly manage multiple representations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; provide meaningful instruction to students; and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
Salary: The position is based in Atlanta, Georgia. Salary is competitive with other public interest fellowship opportunities. Emory University offers a generous benefits package.
