Description

The University of Chicago Department of Pathology is recruiting a full-time assistant professor position in the Section of Transfusion, Hemostasis, and Apheresis Medicine (THAM).  The successful applicant will have clinical responsibilities in transfusion medicine (blood bank and donor collection activities), apheresis, and coagulation.  Duties also include participation in section quality improvement activities, blood utilization oversight, regulatory compliance, supervision and teaching of medical trainees and students, and scholarly activity.

UChicago Medicine (UCM) has 811 adult and pediatric hospital beds.

  • The UCM Blood Bank issues over 50,000 blood products annually and supports adult and pediatric patients, a busy Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, complex heart and transplant surgeries, and cutting edge oncology and stem cell transplant services.  The Blood Bank is at the forefront of support for massively hemorrhaging trauma patients, hematology patients receiving immunotherapeutics, and hemolytic disease of the fetus/newborn.
  • The UCM Apheresis service performs over 1,100 procedures annually, including over 700 therapeutic procedures (plasma exchange, red cell exchange, photopheresis, depletions) and stem cell and cell therapy harvest procedures.
  • The UCM Blood Donation Center is a hospital-based blood collection facility that collects whole blood, plateletpheresis, and performs therapeutic phlebotomy.  Total annual collections are approximately 1,000 products.
  • The UCM Coagulation Lab is a stand-alone laboratory that provides robust routine, stat, and esoteric coagulation testing for UCM patients and outreach clients.  Cutting edge platelet function testing is a specialty of the section.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible to hold a medical license in the State of Illinois, and 3) be board certified or eligible in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine through the American Board of Pathology.
