Scholarship information

The Steven Thayer Memorial Fund was established in 1988 by the family of Steven Thayer. Steven was instrumental in assisting the Founders of The Hopi Foundation in its early conception. Steven supported the work of The Hopi Foundation through its strategic development as a planner and grant writer. He was a champion of Hopi and other Native American people and represented the values of Hopi through his humbleness, gentility, grace and modesty.

As a child, Steven was always interested in the arts and enlarged that interest through journalism. He obtained
his BA from the University of Wisconsin and took professional drawing courses while he lived in San Francisco.
Later, his career would lead him into the field of television production and creative writing when he eventually
published two stories based in science fiction.

Steven lived in Santa Fe, NM as a radio report of legislative affairs and later moved to the Hopi reservation after
marrying his Rosanda Suetopka of Hotevilla Village. There he raised his own family and two children working
with The Hopi Tribal government, traditional leadership, and early organizers of the Hopi Foundation. Out of his
own exposure to Native American art and culture Steven held a belief that education of the Hopi youth in the
arts offered the best chance for the survival of their priceless heritage. To him arts were to be broadly defined as
the use of traditional media—painting, drawing, pottery, basketry, jewelry, writing, architecture, design, apparel,
film, and digital media.
