Summary

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a part-time Student Researcher (~10 hours/ week) to provide research support in ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics. This position is funded through July 2022 and eligible candidates will be bilingual and currently enrolled in college at the undergraduate or graduate level in a related field.

 

The Student Researcher will have the opportunity to participate in professional and academic development sessions hosted by the Center including journal clubs, career development information sessions, and staff development events, including in-services on grant writing, academic presentations, and goal planning. The Center promotes an intellectually stimulating and collaborative environment conducive to academic excellence.

Job Duties
  • Conducts bilingual surveys (English and Spanish) over the phone with patients about their experience with genetic testing. 
  • Works closely with the principal investigator to support the day-to-day progress for studies relating to the ethical, legal and social implications of genomics. 
  • Helps with survey programming and data management to ensure quality and identify and address issues as they arise.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarize information. 
  • Builds reports based on findings for research team and collaborators.
  • Assists with preparation of papers and presentations for dissemination of findings.
  • Attends project meetings.
     

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • Experience Required: None Required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional working proficiency to native fluency in Spanish. 
  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, bioethics, public health or related field.
  • One year of relevant research experience in bioethics, public health or social sciences.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, efficient, and strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of flexibility in accepting work assignments with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks, understand processes, and resolve issues.
