General Summary
- Answering the telephone in an informed, professional manner, transferring phone calls to staff offices, answering questions, and directing calls to proper campus resources.
- Greet guests in a customer-service-oriented, professional manner, offer directions as needed, and assist with requests.
- Perform general duties required to maintain office operations such as distribute office mail, conduct website checks, help organize office mailings, electronic filing, typing, working with spreadsheets, scanning, sorting documents, creating and designing documents, keeping the front desk clean and uncluttered, refill resource supplies, remain current on campus information/resources, and attend regular staff training sessions.
- Assist with other unit projects as needed, that will include departmental tabling events and general presentations.
The Student Office Assistant student staff are expected to serve as a positive representative of CCE using professional verbal and written communication skills while communicating with multiple audiences and supporting CCE’s principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The student staff will be expected to meet with their supervisor weekly as well as demonstrate excellent time management, project management, and multi-tasking skills necessary when working independently.
The Center for Civic Engagement is located at 300 W. North St. Normal, IL. However, occasional meetings, participation/work at events on campus will be necessary as well.

The strategic plan for the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) states that the vision of the department is “a more just and equitable world cultivated through the participation of all people in the co-creation of knowledge and collective action.” Its mission is to connect students, faculty, staff, and alumni with local, national, and global communities through meaningful civic engagement to promote the lifelong learning and development of active community members.”
In general, CCE is responsible for enacting Illinois State’s commitment to civic engagement and fostering a culture that values and rewards civic engagement. This is accomplished through a variety of programs and services with students, faculty, and staff, and in partnership with Bloomington-Normal community organizations. CCE’s work involves volunteering and service-learning, political engagement, and civic education.
CCE is unique in that it reports to both the Division of Student Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs. The unit is comprised of 5 professional staff, 4 graduate assistants, an administrative assistant and several student workers, interns, and fellows. While each staff member has specific responsibilities, the department operates as a team, and therefore, all staff are expected to support a variety of programs and services.
Required Qualifications
1. Students in leadership positions within Alternative Breaks (executive board, trip leaders, etc.) are not eligible to apply.
2. All student employees in the Center for Civic Engagement must have good academic and disciplinary standing to obtain employment.

Work Hours
Seeking availability between 11:45 am - 1:15 pm, and other hours based on departmental need. Additional hours may be available for special events.
