Summary

The Garcia laboratory in BCM's Center for Drug Discovery has NIH support to identify novel male contraceptive targets through high throughput transcriptomics and proteomics approaches, to understand the functional significance of these novel targets through genetically manipulated mouse models, and to develop small-molecule inhibitors against identified functionally relevant targets.


Job Purpose

Student Helpers provides services to a department on a temporary basis while gaining professional experience. The end goal of the work is to define the functional requirement of novel male contraceptive targets, to mechanistically define the molecular functions of key spermatogenic or epididymal proteins, and to accelerate successful drug discovery research.


Job Duties
  • Mouse husbandry, including breeding, weaning, and genotyping animals.
  • Male reproductive tissue dissection, processing for histology and immunohistochemistry.
  • Mouse epididymal sperm isolation for computer assisted sperm analysis.
  • Human and mouse DNA and RNA isolation for PCR and high-throughput sequencing techniques.
  • Management of human and animal protocols.
  • Place lab orders. 
  • Troubleshoot problems as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in genetics, reproductive biology, biochemistry, medicinal/organic chemistry, and/or a related field.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: DNA and/or RNA isolation, PCR, mouse husbandry, tissue dissection, and histology and/or immunohistochemistry.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a team environment.
