Overview
The Academic Advising Counselor/Jewish Foundation for Education of Women (JFEW) Scholars Advisor. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor for Undergraduate Advising and Academic Services. This position provides advising and referrals for specialized populations of undergraduates and acts as the cohort advisor and for the JFEW Scholars program as well as assisting with the administration of the program. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Advising and Academic Services who oversees the Office of Advising and Academic Services (OAAS) and indirectly to the Director of Career Explorations in Arts and Sciences Initiatives in the Office of Undergraduate Education, in order to preserve the dual focus on career and academic advising. Both the Associate Dean and the Director report to the Primary Investigator for the JFEW program (the Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education). Maintains student records that capture required program metrics; coordinates with colleagues in the SAS Scholarships Office, Financial Aid, and Admissions to gather needed information; maintains regular informal contact with JFEW and compiling prepares an annual JFEW Scholar program report. Develops and delivers a program orientation and small workshops for JFEW students and works with the Director of Career Explorations Serves as liaisons with academic departments .

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor for Undergraduate Academic Services. This position provides advising and referrals for specialized populations of undergraduates and acts as the cohort advisor and coordinator for the JFEW Scholars program. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Advising and Academic Services who herself reports to the Primary Investigator for the JFEW program and who oversees the Office of Advising and Academic Services (OAAS) and the Director of Career Explorations in Arts and Sciences Initiatives. The position also reports indirectly to the Director of Career Explorations in Arts and Sciences Initiatives in the Office of Undergraduate Education, in order to preserve the dual focus on career and academic advising. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following: 
• Advises all SAS students within the University, with a special focus on individualized advising and support to JFEW program Scholars.
• Makes appropriate referrals when necessary and works in close collaboration with the SAS Assistant Deans for Advising and Academic Services, as well as colleagues in Career Explorations in Arts and Sciences, to provide academic and pre-professional advising in a comprehensive and collaborative fashion. 
• Reviews and evaluates students’ records to assist with course selection and planning, consideration of scholarly options, and preparation for their academic and post-graduate careers; develops detailed, timely graduation plans emphasizing goal setting and leadership skills aimed at meeting each students’ individualized objectives, and culminating in college success and on-time graduation. 
• Provides on-going, regular advising that will include developing plans to engage in alumni networking, job shadowing or externships, and a Junior year summer internship for JFEW scholars. • Maintains student records that capture required program metrics; coordinates with colleagues in the SAS Scholarships Office, Financial Aid, and Admissions to gather needed information; maintains regular informal contact with JFEW and compiling an annual JFEW Scholar program report. 
• Develops and delivers a program orientation and small workshops for JFEW students and work with the Director of Career Explorations in Arts and Sciences to assist in the identification and outreach to alumni and organizations in order to help students connect with networking and internship contacts. 
• Serves as liaisons with academic departments and programs; supports the School of Arts and Sciences by participating in all student advising functions, such as staffing the Student Advising Centers with walk-in and scheduled appointments, attending the first-year and transfer student recruitment and registration programs, participating in student outreach and training programs, and staffing various school functions such as Open House and Convocation.

Minimum Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an Arts and Sciences field, or equivalent experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of new and continuing student populations and programs, student development and counseling theories and applications. 
• A minimum of two (2) years post-graduate relevant experience in higher education academic or career counseling/advisement.

• Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree 
• Experience working with faculty and staff from multiple units. 
• Possesses empathy, patience, and presence of mind to respond to and defuse contentious situations.
Equipment Utilized
• Microsoft Office suite of applications, including the use of mail merges. 
IMS, Canvas, Sakai, WebNow, lmageNow, MyAdvisor, and Degree Navigator, as well as multiple home-grown databases are consulted on a daily basis.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
• This position may work in offices located on multiple campuses and travel between the 4 New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses on any given day or week. 
• Ability to climb stairs and lift up to 50 lbs. 
• This position requires flexibility and the ability to work occasional evening and/or weekend programs and activities.
