Research and Scholarship Facilitation Specialist - Temporary

The Research and Scholarship Facilitation Specialist will partner with members of the Researcher Engagement group to learn to use a research computing cluster, install and configure research software packages, and assist cluster users with technical issues as they use our clusters for their specific areas of research or scholarship. Following initial training, the Research and Scholarship Facilitation Specialist will independently respond to user issues via our ticketing system and meet with users at our in-person Help Sessions to propose solutions or guide users to appropriate help resources. The nature of help provided to users ranges from simple access and basic use of our systems to making recommendations on code or general workflow performance improvements. This is a temporary summer position with approximate start and end dates of June 3 and August 2.



  • Complete initial and ongoing training needed to independently install and configure software packages on research computing clusters, run example jobs on those systems, and troubleshoot issues with software or running jobs on those systems (~40%).
  • Assist users of research computing clusters and help troubleshoot technical issues either in-person or via our ticketing system (~50%).
  • Attend interdisciplinary meetings across campus with Research Computing's many partner organizations (e.g., Princeton University Library, Princeton Language and Intelligence, Center for Digital Humanities, Data-Driven Social Science, and academic departments) as a representative of the Researcher Engagement group to gather information about new initiatives and needed infrastructure (~10%).


Essential Formal Education (minimum level required for this position): High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities: Qualified candidates should have an interest in supporting a diverse population of scientists, scholars, engineers, and students who use large research computing systems (Linux clusters and storage systems), possess excellent communication skills, and be comfortable working in a command-line Linux environment.
