CDC Office and LocationTwo research opportunities are currently available with the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Sciences (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: CDC WONDER is an ad-hoc query system for the analysis of publicly available federal data related to public health. The participant will become familiar with the various CDC programs and partners, and how they use data on CDC WONDER to inform strategic planning and agency activities.

Under guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following activities:

  • Design and develop state-of-the-art integrated informatics systems for data sharing, which deliver improved data quality and enhanced and timely data access, and which provide an evidence-based foundation for improved public health practice 
  • Develop web-based data dissemination systems for query, analysis, visualization and reporting for CDC WONDER, with a focus on data management activities for mortality data in collaboration with CDC WONDER and the Division of Vital Statistics
  • Conduct data management activities using Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Design and implement relational databases for optimal performance and data integrity
  • Manage large databases and complex metadata
  • Configure WONDER web application XSL and XML specifications to implement data presentation policies
  • Plan database capacity for new projects
  • Analyze complex datasets and information to develop system requirements and business rules in collaboration with a diverse team of stake-holders
  • Develop processes for data validation and data structuring
  • Web application software development, modification, enhancement, quality assurance and support
  • Support system operations responsibilities for high profile, public-facing production systems

  • Learn data science and data visualizations through online classes and tutorials
  • Data mining and cleaning to convert data into its desired form
  • Contributing to produce visualizations of population health data through figures, tables, maps, and interactive online tools
  • Participating in the development of analytic frameworks to interpret data and report data to CDC partners
  • Contributing to editing and updating existing code on analysis of population health metrics,
  • Identify data and reporting needs by being involved in coordinating discussions with individual CDC programs
  • Collaborate with mentor(s) to gain knowledge to respond to CDC data requests and/or technical assistance with reports

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Spring 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Skills/Eligibility:


The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience in performing data analysis, queries, and reports
  • Understanding and familiarity with using or able to learn data technologies (preferred SQL, XML, Java)
  • Experience with communicating information and working on the maintenance and development of informatics tools
  • Experience with data management tools
  • Experience with web application tools

Eligibility Requirements


  • Degree: Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
