Job Summary


The Post-Doctoral Fellow in Psychology provides knowledgeable consultation regarding CAPS services and general guidance regarding clinical issues to faculty/staff, parents, students, and the community. Provides outreach to the campus community. Represents the office in a positive and professional manner and maintains contact with outside community.

Job Description

Typical duties include:

  • Provides clinical services to the student population, including intake, ongoing counseling/psychotherapy, walk-in assessment, initial consultation appointments/triage, personal counseling and therapy, consultation and referral, group therapy, case management, on-call, testing assessment and emergency crisis intervention.
  • Maintains clinical documentation in accordance with legal and ethical standards on an electronic health record system.
  • Participates in training activities for Master's and Doctoral level trainees. Willing to provide and participate in supervision and supervision activities for practicum students.
  • Provides consultation and outreach to colleagues, students, faculty, staff, and/or parents in order to coordinate support, development, and well-being of students and community.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments in the University.
  • Assists in the day to day operation of the Counseling and Psychological Services and the College of Health and Human Services.
  • Provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus including pre-storm preparation, post-storm clean-up and replacement of stored goods to ready campus for operation after a storm; or other services assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of all professional doctoral degree requirements prior to the start of fellowship.
  • Experience providing brief individual and group therapy, emergency assessments, and crisis intervention.
  • Experience operating a personal computer with proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Experience applying college student development theory. Experience working with a full range of college student mental health concerns.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates preferred from APA approved doctoral programs and internships in psychology. 
  • Experience providing clinical service for one or more of the following issues: substance use/abuse, sexual and other trauma/PTSD, crisis and walk-in students, or personality disorders.
  • Experience providing psychological testing/evaluation and report writing for diagnostic and treatment purposes. Experience working with multidisciplinary treatment teams preferred. 
  • Experience providing multiculturally-competent counseling and outreach with under-served or minority populations.
  • Experience with faculty, staff, and student group consultation, liaison functions, program evaluation, quality assurance, or college student mental health research.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Broad "generalist" clinical skills in assessing and intervening with a wide range of disorders and concerns utilizing a time limited model of care.
  • Knowledge of developmental and counseling issues for college/university populations.
  • Ability to conduct effective therapy and outreach with diverse populations including knowledge and sensitivity regarding multicultural issues. 
  • Knowledge and experience in utilizing supervision appropriately and consulting with senior staff as needed. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with good editing and grammar skills.
  • Knowledge of effective decision-making and problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to practice ethically with professional integrity, confidentiality, and a desire to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians and a range of client presentations. Excellent interpersonal and team skills.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible yet highly organized working style.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer with proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Knowledge of changing technology impacting psychological and therapy services.
  • Ability to complete required documentation on an electronic health record system and quality assurance activities including routine monitoring and management of student treatment compliance (i.e., missed appointments, cancellations, etc.) in accordance with agency policies and state and federal regulations.
