A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Welc in the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). Research in the Welc Lab focuses on studying system-to-system cross-talk and the integrative cellular interactions that regulate cardiac and skeletal muscle pathophysiology and function. The applicant will use in vivo and in vitro approaches to study how normal reparative mechanisms are dysregulated in the lethal, chronic muscle disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The newly formed Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH) is home to one of the largest bone and muscle research groups in the world, providing an exciting environment for collaborative musculoskeletal research with ample opportunities for trainees.
Applicants must possess a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree and a strong background in biomedical research and preferably musculoskeletal or molecular biology. Prior work experience in transgenic and knockout mouse models, mouse phenotyping, molecular and cell biology techniques, cell culture, biochemistry, histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics is highly desirable.
The applicant must be highly self-motivated, able to design and conduct experiments independently, analyze and interpret results, read literature, present work at meetings, write scientific manuscripts, and speak and write fluently in English. Candidates should be able to function well independently and in a small group. US citizens or permanent residents will have the opportunity to compete for NIH-funded training grants, but this is not required.
