Post Masters Student on Additive Manufacturing Quality Control

What You Will Do

The Deformation Processing Team is seeking a Post-Masters Research Assistant to join the Team in support of metals powder bed additive manufacturing research and development projects. The Deformation Processing Team works on metals forming and heat treating projects using rolling mills, hydraulic presses, vacuum heat treating furnaces, and laser powder bed metal additive manufacturing machines. The successful candidate will work as an integral member of a team tackling a variety of additive manufacturing problems. In particular this position will focus on providing machine learning and computer vision support to thermal and other quality control data for various additive manufacturing processes. You will work with a mentor, but will be assigned portions of projects over which you will have responsibility. This is a 1-year position, with the possibility of extension, intended for students who want to develop research skills prior to applying to grad school, and/or who want to learn about career opportunities at LANL. You will have the opportunity to present your work and contribute to written reports from experimental activities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related field within the last 3 years from an accredited university with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2

  • Experience with machine learning or computer vision techniques and data analysis

  • Basic understanding of various metals additive manufacturing processes

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance which normally requires U.S. Citizenship

Education/Experience : Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related field.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with additive manufacturing technology and datasets

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a hands-on laboratory environment

  • Demonstrated ability to identify creative solutions and design experiments

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
