The Postdoctoral Researcher will focus on experimental studies of materials degradation in molten salts. The Postdoctoral Researcher will design, test, and employ state-of-the-art technology and techniques to understand and quantify material degradation in environments relevant to molten salt reactors, and other extreme environments.
Responsibilities:
- Design, coordinate, and conduct molten salt corrosion experiments, including flowing experiments
- Develop and benchmark electrochemical methods for measuring salt properties related to corrosion
- Use range of analytical techniques to characterize materials and salts
- Work toward a mechanistic understanding of material degradation in molten salts
- Communicate and coordinate results with internal and external collaborators to facilitate collaborations
- Disseminate scientific results in peer-reviewed journals, and at national and international conferences
- Comply with environmental, safety, and health requirements
- Provide leadership and informal mentorship to PhD students

- A PhD in Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline
Preferred Experience:
- An excellent record of productive and creative research
- Experience working with molten salts, and knowledge of molten salt science
- Understanding of radiation effects in materials
- Experience with electrochemical techniques, particularly in molten salts
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of the basic principles of high temperature corrosion
- Experience utilizing microstructural characterization such as light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
